Why does no prog album sound like In Court of The Crimson King? It was like the first one I ever heard and it just absolutely blew me away at a young age. It sounded simultaneously ancient and futuristic while nailing the perfect haunting mood. Rest of the genre is so different.
I'm not sure if the whole album actually has a cohesive sound. Is it so different from Foxtrot, for that matter?

Someone said people say every song on In the Court spawned a different subgenre of prog but to me it sounds more like the album had about TWO sounds, "Schizoid Man" and everything else

Schizoid Man is definitely the biggest outlier. I gotta say I only ever get the urge to listen to that or the title track.
