I gotta be real, I'm not feeling the juice on DeSantis. He doesn't have that Trumpian childlike disinhibition and lockdowns are not gonna be your 50+% consensus issue.

I've said since at least April 2020 that excess deaths are the fairest way to count coronavirus deaths. Nothing else is killing that much in 2020, the homicide spike shouldn't touch the numbers much, and FL's official toll undercounts significantly vs excess deaths as of November

This is not to call DeSantis himself a liar; his argument is not that lockdowns are worse, but that they are no better, and the FL numbers appear to track with this. It might be true, but it's very difficult to measure public health interventions.

The problem is that the efficacy of preventive measures of any kind is guesswork at the beginning and becomes clear in retrospect, if ever. Debates over school closures are not new, they were part of a range of interventions tried (for example) during Spanish Flu.

We can end up with totally conflicting 'lessons' based on various ways of reading data. Who knows what climatic, political, economic or other factors are at play in a given area? Florida is as yet neither a success story nor a failure. Its outcome tracks with the rest of the US.

Japan closed schools fast, went online and told everyone to wear masks indoors, there's been no major outbreak and no apparent slowdown of commerce. In Tokyo. Maybe because the Japanese don't have kids to begin with? There's basically no explanation.
