The OD story also doesn't rely on coincidence. He probably swallowed his stash when he heard the cops were coming, as he had done before. I think the guilty verdict is fair but it's not like, irrational to say the drugs were probably a factor.
It's extremely unlikely that swallowing his stash would cause him to overdose that quickly. It has to be digested before it does anything and would be significantly weaker regardless.
I'm not an expert on opioid absorbtion but twenty minutes seems like a reasonable amount of time for an unknown quantity of orally ingested fentanyl to cause an overdose.
