One crazy thing about corona is how fast the PCR test was developed. Charite in Berlin designed a working test within two weeks of the earliest warning signs, days after the genome was released. The US fell behind by ordering a stupid "improvement" on the design that didn't work.
I guess they wanted to make sure a MERS or SARS outbreak didn't fly under the radar, as if containment would be any different. Nobody tests for SARS under normal circumstances. Anyway we ended up acceding to the test that actually works.
