The best thing about owning pets is you can watch your descent from youth to old age, decrepitude and eventual, inevitable death play out in fast-forward several times over the course of your own life.
I always wanted a rat as a kid and ended up with one in college. Fucking things live three years, max. Lovely creatures but you get to know them and boom, they're gone.

Rodent lifespans are brutal. Fortunately the best rodent, the chinchilla, will live about as long as a cat or dog as long as you never let it get warm or feed it anything except wood.
