And from what I can glean from reading about it (I was too young to have real memories of it), whatever the Satanic Panic attacked was invariably cool

It also antagonized a lot of people to the point that it helped to inspire what it sought to combat- just like today's moral panics ::cranks Deicide record louder::

The way it snowballed caught everybody by surprise, only problem was there was no way rational liberals could sign onto a *literal* witch hunt. "What if *we* did that, but with science?" They wondered. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how the AIDS panic was born.
