I just did. If you're asking why scientists don't put test subjects in the room with potential vectors of infectious disease I might recommend another country to move to, but even if carrying out the research is possible you still won't find *published* results.

The significance here is that you can't stop people at the door and find out whether they can smell and taste or whether they have a headache or feel vaguely shitty or hoarse or have a cough. The question is only meaningful in relation to containing the disease.
