The left doesn't have a progressive story to tell people about how they're going to deliver a better future anymore. It's been reduced to telling people "defund the police or you support killing black people, open the borders or you support putting kids in cages".

The idea that shifting funding from policing to social services will, in some automatic and necessary way, reduce crime and thus the need for police is preposterous Laffer-curve logic. Clearly a post-hoc rationalization of the "defund" slogan rather than a considered proposal.

There is broad popular support for the idea that the police should not shoot unarmed black people, or kneel on their necks until they asphyxiate. If your goal is to stop that, you are kneecapping yourself by instead making it about defunding or abolishing the police.
