If there is a single necessary and sufficient error on Trump's part that can account for his failure to close decisively, it has to be his performance on coronavirus from January through mid-March.

Despite the plandemic talk on right wing Twitter, most Republicans are genuinely concerned about C19. It's effectively a natural disaster and I think people understand that too, but there's no excuse for the early testing issues and faulty guidance.

Early on, there was a very easy win in letting the Democrats stew about racism while spinning up production of PPE and testing supplies. The travel ban probably bought us time vs what happened in Europe but Trump had these options as well.
