It's my own view that the Times' power and authority derived precisely from its appearance of impartiality. It was always to some degree a polite fiction but one that also served as a constraint.

Even knowing it's a rag, you could rely on it as a source as long as the information was adverse to its preferred narrative. There was no guarantee such information would be published, but if it was you could trust it. They're moving towards a guarantee of non-disclosure
