      some 17 year old kid blasted a pedophile, a serial wife beater, and a burglar chasing him with a handgun and it's a big moral quandary for some people who is "the bad guy", which tells me a lot about how we got here in the first place

      I started to post that but I don't know if they left room to drop the charge to a lesser degree at some point during the process.

      In this case, gathering sufficient evidence may have prevented them from bringing charges in the first place
