I have less objection to the piece (though as you say there are telling omissions) than to the online reaction. Lot of kneejerk, ill-informed, bad faith bs alongside the more considered commentary. Some from ppl who salivate performatively every time Criterion announces releases.

Also, I disagree that Criterion is 'telling' us anything. Their curation choices are down to licensing/rights deals as much as anything. I think it's a problem that people have put it on such a pedestal that the common belief IS that Criterion is actively constructing a canon.
They weren't until blockbuster shut down, now they have to because they're the only independent physical media merchant and the only streaming provider that gives a shit about quality

Video rental used to be the ostensibly neutral common carrier of film culture and IP law regarding physical media meant they could respond directly to audience demand. Netflix couldn't do that if they wanted to because every major film on there is on its own contract
