I have less objection to the piece (though as you say there are telling omissions) than to the online reaction. Lot of kneejerk, ill-informed, bad faith bs alongside the more considered commentary. Some from ppl who salivate performatively every time Criterion announces releases.

Video rental used to be the ostensibly neutral common carrier of film culture and IP law regarding physical media meant they could respond directly to audience demand. Netflix couldn't do that if they wanted to because every major film on there is on its own contract
