Basically there used to be the possibility that you could leverage innate talent to make it in a given field. That shifted to where we are now, where more and more jobs are instead selecting for the most ruthless cutthroats, ie whoever is the best at canceling.

That means in practice that you need a growing number of cancelable offenses. One, you have an incumbent in the job you want. Two, people are good at changing their behavior when their life literally depends on it.
