It's part of the new role in which they have found themselves. Journalism was the path of least resistance for the successor ideology with the industry facing secular decline but also having a demonstrated utility as the voice of money

People talk a big game about cancel culture "coming from" the academy but Harvard has proven a much harder target than the NYT, two institutions that were probably comparably prestigious in, say, 1995.

Anyway these unions are formalized cliques and methods of ideological control over both the company and the members. If they get salary hikes, well you can't say they haven't fucking earned them
