Sure I'm less focused on psychologizing the subjects than understanding what their social roles are, who gets to be which by virtue of what.

They put themselves in those positions. If you want to stay in the group, you develop a sense of where the line is and create a history of respecting it. If you want to destroy the group you will be at best indifferent to what will or won't get you ejected.
