The economy tanked five years later. The oil was never going to stop coming and the military industrial complex was doing fine with or without a war. It's not clear at all what material interest of the US could have drawn it into Iraq.
So, the simple reason was the well documented web of a bunch of vague ideological and material influences, and W who had already started a war needed a second one to get re-elected at the height of his popularity?

Iraq 2 was a senseless tragedy. It's clear that a critical mass of people in the right place were in favor of it, but only in some cases is there any obvious reason why.
