Pretty sure it hasn’t been written. I think we’d know if it had. Nothing that thoughtfully traces the ideologies back to their roots in the academy, etc.

It doesn't come from the academy. Whatever the academy is now, was established to serve and nurture it. The satanic panic of the 1980s : the awokening :: SARS-1 : SARS-2.
In other words, a latent local vulnerability (wet market, criminal or pseudocriminal charges with questionable presumption of innocence) gets hammered by an evolving threat that takes advantage of it. The first time it gets beaten back. But the vulnerability is never patched.
