The CDC was nobly lying for much less noble causes in February, as it briefed the Senate on the oncoming humanitarian catastrophe while insisting to the public that the risk was low. The entire federal government was bent towards continuing business as usual.

It's almost impossible to imagine that policymakers truly believed that masks could not help the public as they simultaneously insisted that doctors need them at all costs. The surgeon general's infamous tweet indicated as much.

Doctors may have believed that, because doctors believe what the CDC tells them. But the CDC does not consistently share its best information with the public. Remember in late March when it pretended to 'discover' asymptomatic spread?
