I think there's something to it as a privately-held value. But if your kindness creates the overwhelming appearance of kindness, you are not listening to your conscience.
Not least of all because you can look around, or read any book for children, and find plentiful examples of thoroughly self-interested flatterers. If that's all you can bring to the table, I guess it's the work. But I won't be here abetting a fraud.
