I honestly don't know where in the academy you could get paid for quality work. I'd be there. The only good profs I've ever seen are old as shit.

We had some good ones at my undergrad university, I would have stayed there if they had a grad program then. They put in a football stadium after I left and cut back on academic programs instead.
