It's mostly intuitive anyway. If spread were driven by aerosols the disease would move much faster, and even then these would still be the riskiest areas.

An interesting point in the article I read was that, on average, it takes time to gain sufficient viral load to trigger an infection. I believe it was 1 to 1.5 hours (assuming someone isn't coughing directly in one's mouth).
