At this point higher ed is simply set up this way. Come out of undergrad with at least 50k of debt, congrats, there are absolutely zero jobs for a bachelor's with no experience. Go to grad school or do something worse than what you would have gotten at 18 with a diploma.

I wouldn't lay out for any education that wasn't premed, nursing or engineering. Even in "STEM" parents aren't necessarily equipped to predict what's going to be worthwhile - for example, a degree in math doesn't really belong in that acronym as it's typically used.
