Everyone understands this, including the protesters, which is why they will be happy to leave the police in place if they cannot replace criminal justice system entirely and become the police.
They can become the police if they take their badges.
As far as I understand it, the idea of abolishing the police is not to abolish those kinds of duties but to fire the existing police and replace them with something different enough that it can't be called a continuation. This also will never happen
