The entire thing was about consolidating personal control in a corner of an industry but the example caused the tactic to appear everywhere all at once, giving power to the rhetorical tools that allow the new ideology to carve out ever more territory.

This was what the right wing "gamergate" people were reacting to. Many of them had their own ulterior motives, but it wouldn't have been an opportunity if it weren't for the left wing side ignoring the facts in order to ensure the correct story was told.
