Small arms are, not quite pointless but overrated imo. The best self-defense in the context of a breakdown of society is community ties and the ability to quickly form new ones, most individual possessions would quickly part with their owners were such an event to take place.

That's true but also your community probably needs to have a few guns.
You also need people who enjoy doing things like running patrols and seizing trespassers. You can't threaten to call raiders' managers or file an HR complaint. That's beneath all these guys, they're the commissariat
