Notwithstanding the people who want to sell you their One Weird Trick, nothing could have been done that would have ended in success. This system will run until it can't, and there's nothing we can do except die before we're implicated in the crueler thing that comes after. Imo.
Don't take this the wrong way but if I believed that I wouldn't be here to talk to you. Everything is always crueler in absolute terms as humanity grows and gains control of its surroundings, but there's also more joy and ever greater victories.
