Both great books, incidentally! Easy, fast-paced and short enough for a high school class without sacrificing quality or humanity. But neither revels in its ethnic particularity in the way we've come to expect world lit to do.

Achebe in particular is very careful to scrub as much local color out of the story as possible, treating the reader as one of the villagers rather than one of the colonists. The woke could only ever read this as a mistake or miscalculation, much like quoting Elliot in the title.
