This crisis has exposed how unprepared capitalism is for unexpected shocks. If you had proposed a year ago that the global economy would be voluntarily shut down by the state to combat infectious disease no one would have believed you, because we've come to see it as inevitable.

There is a tendency, not entirely without merit but often overblown, to see capitalism as driven entirely by, and possessing limits only as a result of, its own internal logic. What we're seeing here is a refutation of that view in real time. It is dead as a doornail.

We bitch about leaders mishandling this and they are but if you watch the PBS doc on Spanish flu there's a bit where Wilson knowingly continues troop transports to Europe (with that virus targeting young men). I don't think there's any comparison
