It's been hereditary since Kim Jong Il and if the higher-ups wanted to break that they seemed to have an excellent chance when he died. No idea what the actual succession rules look like though, I assume some council has to give a largely symbolic vote

i'm not going to pretend to be an expert on NK, just seems to me it would be expected that the heir would be a son or grandson. probably why KJU had his brother killed but his sister is still alive.
