People sympathize with characters when the characters are sympathetic, you don't have to want to be someone in order to see part of your own story reflected in them. Pretending this effect is undesirable makes for bad stories
The "missed the point by idolizing them" meme rubs me the wrong way. Reminds me of the eternal struggle to determine the true meaning of Fight Club
