I know this person is mostly joking but this genuinely seems to be how most millennials view food. On the other hand, I'm not sure any of the bay leaves I've ever used were necessary.

Cutting things out of recipes is generally okay, at least as an experiment, and certainly better than adding things. Though I will bay leaves have a subtle flavor that you're unlikely to notice but still matters - I wouldn't make minestrone without them.
