That's an entirely different question than whether a government should pay the immediate families of people it recklessly or intentionally kills or maims.

The case that allowing the sale of wildlife constitutes "recklessly or intentionally killing or maiming" people in a different country because of a naturally-arising virus doesn't seem any less tenuous to me.

Other countries also do not allow the sale of live wildlife for food. This isn't something specific that Chinese people do, it's a basic safety standard the CCP has failed to institute.

I think a significant factor is, it grosses people out. But then maybe Britain should be paying reparations for mad cow disease because using your diseased cattle as feed for the other cattle is also gross.
