The mask lie originated with the CDC and co., to the best of my knowledge. WHO's twitter acct only recently hopped on the anti-mask bandwagon. Perhaps it has something to do with the US being their largest donor?
Oh yeah. I wouldn't blame the mask thing on China. In fact it proves the point that the WHO's inability to provide information more accurate than the sum of all the lies every powerful country tells is a disastrous flaw in its very conception.
As I've said before, the same argument applies to the CDC in spades. The US threatening the WHO only exacerbates the problem you've identified, which is governments using purse power to threaten intl organizations into complying with their lies.
The US is especially venal in this respect. Remember what they did to the OPCW in the prelude to Iraq when Bustani wouldn't tow the line? +
