I've been playing for like five years. It's fun with the right group. Ideally it should feel kinda like doing your taxes.
When you play a video game RPG it calculates all the numbers for you on the equivalent of an excel spreadsheet, but when you play D&D you have to do it yourself by hand. So you'll get a stat boost and have to adjust your attack, defense, skills etc

It depends how 'by the book' people play it too, there are a lot of groups with GMs that just want to tell their own story and kinda ignore the niceties. Mine is more focused on combat and looting.
