Honestly the media needs to be far far far more alarmist than they are being. People need to be panicking and afraid to leave their homes. That's the only way public officials will feel they can close bars, restaurants, etc.

If the choice is apathy or panic the lesson from Europe seems to be err on the side of panic.
Seriously, what are we expecting people to actually *do* if they panic? Nothing. Which is exactly what we need and exactly what the government is going well out of its way to discourage.

Panic is defined as the absence of rationality. The people I know that are responsible and isolate socially as much as possible are worried, but not panicking.

Right. So there's actually no risk of panic at all, right? If anything the people panicking are the ones rushing out to Costco thinking they'll be starved in quarantine.
