On the west coast, there are consultancy firms which run primarily on state and federal grant money. In the industrial sector, they fan out to spread the “lean production” gospel. It pays well enough to outfit the consultants in very pricey fashion riffs on “working stiff” lookz.

I feel like I had an answer to this but I kinda don't. You don't need a consultant to tell you to lay people off. Businesses are basically just expected to do that. I guess a consultant can tell you who to lay off and give a 'nice' boss cover?

They give the boss a scientific quasi-civil theological sense of virtue yeah. But these consultants seed markets with competitive pressures that earn them clients. So they also kill off bosses and business owners who were their former clients. It’s next level.

That reputation is all projected out of west coast polite society dinner parties. These states and those polite socialites are savage neoliberals. And these states were only ever libertarian which meant that they were hotbeds of schismatic cults. Regressive tax havens for orgies.

The cult thing I knew. Pynchon makes that connection in Inherent Vice.
