Novel virus so no vaccine or treatment and everyone can get it, spreads during incubation so everyone *will* get it, doubles fast (~a week), order of magnitude deadlier than flu. Not as aggressive as SARS or ebola, but much more killing power and systemic risk to health care.

South Korea has kept it in check with serious effort, and China has kept it in check with heroic effort. Iran has let it run wild, and Italy is somewhere in between. If you ask me, the US campaign is looking more like Iran than anywhere else.

This is not only likely to overwhelm the systems of major countries. Because it's going to hit everywhere all at once it will cause worldwide shortages of every piece of medical equipment and protective gear necessary to control it.

For what it's worth, MERS was similarly concerning early on, but it just isn't as virulent as c19.
