      Hi Trevor. That tree does not imply that the German case is a direct ancestor of the Italian ones. At the rate that this virus evolves at a zero length branch can represent a lot of time and many transmissions. Plausible, indeed likely, that the common ancestor was in China.

      To clarify, I still think the hypothesis of Bavarian seeding of Italian outbreak a parsimonious explanation for the genetic data, but this doesn't mean it's the only explanation. I believe these two scenarios are both quite plausible: 4/5pic.twitter.com/eVmGPlkiJJ
