      I got a kickstarter mp3 player as a gift that has a volume knob and playback buttons. It's pretty slick.

      https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HFQDYQP/  it does have a swipe gesture to open the menu but it lets you browse filesystem, has a microsd slot and a 1/8" jack so I can't complain

      I have too much dignity for phone jack dongles or streaming services. Rather carry a library.
