      Okay, I don't *know* for sure. But my suspicion is that a new paradigm of criminality took hold in the wake of the counterculture and the sexual revolution.

      Rape law reform happened around that time, for example. Before that, raping your spouse didn't "count" for the purposes of criminal law. Women began to realize how many had been taken advantage of by male relatives and spouses. Manson and the broader Cali cult boom.
