These two things are *not quite* in contradiction with one another, since the proposed deportation freeze is temporary. But a substantial portion of Bernie's base - many of them Chapo listeners - believe that borders are morally unjust. They need to be told it's not them, it's us
The play here is not to call for Sanders to support open borders, because nobody seriously believes he would. The play is to make border enforcement a political dog turd when in fact it's fantastically important to working class voters.
