I finally watched the Joker and it's kind of a letdown. I don't see how people read it as a socialist picture or an incel picture. It just kind of says "hey, isn't this fucked up?" and lets you fill in the blanks and people ran away with it, I guess.

Like for either of those readings to work you'd kind of need the Joker to be a hero, which hardly seems to be intended, however much you're invited to sympathize with his circumstances.

It's a polarization film and the line along which it polarizes is extremely useful

I was going to call it an Issue Film. It points at some societal Issues but ultimately doesn't have anything to say about what should be done. Which I suppose is fine as far as it goes but not what I was led to expect.

The point of the movie to me was that although Arthur isn't a hero, he's also not really a villain. It's difficult but not impossible to imagine he really could be in a relationship, hold down a job as a clown, take care of his mom and just be kind of unpleasant the whole time.

But instead things just don't happen that way, a couple random acts of cruelty prevent him from having any kind of life, and there isn't really even anyone at fault.
