I finally watched the Joker and it's kind of a letdown. I don't see how people read it as a socialist picture or an incel picture. It just kind of says "hey, isn't this fucked up?" and lets you fill in the blanks and people ran away with it, I guess.
The point of the movie to me was that although Arthur isn't a hero, he's also not really a villain. It's difficult but not impossible to imagine he really could be in a relationship, hold down a job as a clown, take care of his mom and just be kind of unpleasant the whole time.

But instead things just don't happen that way, a couple random acts of cruelty prevent him from having any kind of life, and there isn't really even anyone at fault.

I guess but it seems to at least be swimming upstream to say that he isn't really to blame for all the murders.

Depends how you feel about the Goetz case referenced in the subway scene, for example. Philips knows that there's a whole herd of people who will outright refuse to feel anything for Arthur at all, that's why it got the Golden Gabagool over in Venice.
