A point I've also seen made elsewhere is that, when those systems were national, those were the same systems that bright rural farmboys were using to get into their excellent state -level (or better!) engineering schools. It was a win for the kids of NYT journos and no one else.
What's fucked up is this isn't a situation like state unis selling seats to Chinese parents, these are presumably Asian-American kids. Their own kids are gonna eat McDonald's and shit apple pies. Why shaft them on a few merit scholarships?
Because it wasn't "a few", it was half the incoming class of Harvard. /Also, it turns out that kids who do 40 hours a week of cram school from the age of 4 are boring.
