I find pedantry and bill splitting to be a distinctly pmc phenomenon, working class you look out for your mates more etc In my experience anyway. Maybe cultural too but like my Dad wouldn't have a bar of it and I'm the same.

lol I thought I was misreading re maybe he meant "sign of class" as in "it's a classy thing to do", anything else would be undignified etc but the end re plebeians suggested it was meant to convey like working class being frugal/stingy?

Yes okay so doesn't neatly map on to atomised class relations of today where privilege doesn't imply any duty or obligation to society/the "plebeians". In fact often implies the ability to buy your way out of even basic obligations.
