The people who were most mad about walking simulators were the ones who had their games tagged with it on Steam. The biggest backlash was specifically to Gone Home which made money through deceptive advertising. Others wanted to run the same grift with no warning system.

"Walking Sim" isn't a problem for a game like Obra Dinn, The Witness, or Myst. It's a problem for a dev team that wants to make Myst money off a slick trailer and the right attitude, because now the marks have a word for what they're doing.
