No idea if Yale is like the lesser private schools in this regard but the egalitarian attitude is probably worse for the merit admittees on financial aid than open disdain
How it works at Barnard or Brandeis or Tufts is you get let in and they charge you exactly what your state university would charge and you get exactly the same product. You can't 'network' unless you're willing to mortgage the rest of your life to fit in, take an unpaid job, etc
