It's the former. Cronenberg's Crash wouldn't have been critically successful in any era of which I'm aware.
How would Crash (2005) be received now? Was it ahead of its time or did it release at the exact perfect moment?

See that sounds more like Green Book than Crash to me. Crash was almost proto-woke, with racial hatred bubbling just below the surface of every quotidian interaction
