The bullying that I saw and occasionally experienced in elementary and middle school in the late 90s-early aughts made a lasting impression on me. I'm not sure that our parents grew up with anything like what I saw. They were baffled by school shootings, but I wasn't.

Perceptive teachers and disciplinary officials were frightened by how my classmates treated each other and helpless to intervene. Physical fights were rare due to zero tolerance policies, so the violence was inflicted socially. The strategies we learned back then grew up with us.
