The whole "jailing pharma executives" thing is nice and all, it'll probably be a good way to seize some assets, but we shouldn't kid ourselves that a capitalist firm is capable of creating an epidemic of addiction out of thin air.

Fast food didn't cause the obesity epidemic either. The forces that grind people into a shape where they need a massive calorie surplus or (essentially) exogenous dopamine to live their lives aren't amassed in a single culpable representative.

When we take aim at the ruling class we aim past its individual mouthpieces to the monster that pulls their strings. It isn't a firm or a person or a conspiracy or even a state. It's the impersonal system of social practice that mandates their (mis)behavior.

Cards on the table: I am terrified of opioids. I have been blessed not to suffer prolonged or extreme pain thus far in my life, so I haven't truly needed them. I want to be able to take them safely when I *do* need them. To me this means having a life worth living sober.
